After the results of the Excellence Initiative were announced, the participants met spontaneously in the Senate meeting room to celebrate. After a round of sparkling wine, Professor Dr. Thomas Schack and Professor Dr. Ipke Wachsmuth reached for guitar and harmonica and sang an “Excellence” song with the audience to the melody of Joshua Kadison’s song “Jessie”: “We are so happy about our cluster, live on an excellent star; we do our thing, sometimes we are really good at it…”.

Excellence in research…
Within the Cluster of Excellence Cognitive Interaction Technology (CITEC), scientists from a variety of faculties such as biology, linguistics, physics, psychology and sports science jointly conduct research on the interaction between man and machine with the aim of simplifying and improving communication. The research area necessitates cooperation with strategic partners. The Cluster is supported, among others, by the companies Miele, Bertelsmann, Honda and the v. Bodelschwingh Foundation Bethel, who provide important research input from the business sector. Since 2013, CITEC has had its own state-of-the-art research building on the North Campus which is optimally tailored to the work carried out there. CITEC has been awarded a one-time extension to its funding through the Excellence Initiative until the end of 2019. Once funding from the Excellence Initiative has been discontinued, Bielefeld University will continue to operate CITEC as a central academic institute, so that its outstanding research in the field of robotics and human-machine communication can go on.
…and teaching
The concept of the Bielefeld Graduate School in History and Sociology (BGHS) included the creation of an innovative, structured doctoral programme. Individuality, creativity and initiative are of particular importance, contributing to the fact that about 40% of doctoral students come from abroad. More than two hundred doctoral students from sociology and history study and conduct research together under one roof. After it had received funding from the Excellence Initiative for ten years, this was cut only due to the discontinuation of funding for graduate schools as a whole. However, the BGHS continues to be a beacon for the promotion of young researchers at Bielefeld University through internal university funding and is deeply embedded in the Faculties of History and Sociology.
